Talking About Race & Racism

• Talk about race itself

• Let them know it’s okay to notice differences but to be careful to not judge on them

• Talk about the benefit of differences

• Point out how though we may be different, we are also similar

• Teach them about stereotypes and how not all people in one group are alike

• Discuss the history of racism

• Explain why certain words and phrases can be hurtful

• Remind them that racism isn’t a thing of the past

• Discuss how people are sometimes treated differently because of the color of their skin

• Talk about what they can do to make change
